Whispering Pines Farm offers Labrador Retrievers bred for hunting, competition and family companions. We strive for
quality and the enhancement of the breed. All of our dogs are from proven hunting stock, and are equally as
comfortable in the field as they are in the home. Puppies are available occasionally. Check our puppy page for information on currently available puppies. Also check out the Buyer Feedback page for testimonials and photos of
puppies from proud owners.
Bill got his first Labrador Retriever in 1990 - Lady Duchess of Whispering Pines. She was his constant companion around the farm until she passed away in 2001. Although not formally trained, she was a natural-born retriever and a gentle soul. Lady opened up a whole new world of raising and training dogs for Bill, and it is in her memory that we strive to produce Labradors that are wonderful family companions and can do the work they were bred for. Bill has been training dogs for hunting and AKC Hunt Test competitions since 1999. The Hunt Test competitions caught his interest because they are pass/fail – that is, the dogs do not compete against each other, but if they do the job and retrieve the birds, they pass. So every dog that enters can “win”. The atmosphere is friendly and helpful, especially for beginners. Bill wanted to contribute to the sport, so he decided to become a judge for these events. He has judged all levels of Hunt Tests: Junior, Senior and Master. He has received many compliments on the tests he designs, as they are both challenging and fair to the dog and handler.
Janet has had a love of animals all of her life, starting with horses when she was a child. Visiting her uncle’s horse farm in New York was always the highlight of her summer. Janet’s love of animals continued in her adult life, as she volunteered at wildlife rehabilitation centers in New Jersey, New Mexico and West Virginia and gained experience handling numerous species of hawks, owls, eagles and other wildlife. Janet returned to college in her 30’s and graduated Magna cum laude from West Virginia University in 1994 with a B.S. in Wildlife Resources. You will most likely find Janet helping train and exercise the dogs, working on the computer, or keeping up-to-date with the latest information on whelping puppies and canine nutrition. Janet completed seminars on Canine Reproduction by Dr. Robert Hutchison, LRCP Breeders Education, Building a Better Dog with Dr. Carmen Battaglia, and Holistic Pet Care by Dr. Douglas Knueven. Janet is happiest when she is surrounded by her labs, and takes great pains to give each puppy in every litter absolutely the best care possible.
We love Labradors because they are so
lovable and versatile. Labs are excellent hunting dogs,
and can be trained as obedience, agility, dock diving,
search & rescue, assistance and therapy dogs - even
surfing dogs! (click to see Ian and Cooper surfing)
Our farm is located on 48 rolling acres in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. We believe our home was built in the early 1800's and are still researching it's history. We completed the exterior restoration in 2007, added a second bathroom in 2009, remodeled the kitchen in 2010, and are making plans for the rest of interior now. In December 2007, we were honored to be asked to be part of the Mineral County Historical Society's Christmas Tour. Over 200 people toured our house and we were even able to gather a little more information about the past owners from our visitors.
We are situated between Pittsburgh PA and Washington DC. Click here for link to Mapquest and enter zip code 26726 to see where we are located.
